Mennas - a unique white wine experience
Mennas was created independently by Hans-Peter Baumann. It is a cross between the well-known Gewürztraminer and the old Valais variety Gwäss.
The idea for this cross was born from Hans-Peter's desire to give the low-acid but full-bodied and fruity Gewürztraminer more acidity – and thus better structure and longevity. The new Mennas grape variety combines the qualities of both crossing parents and thus fully meets the breeder's expectations.
The breeding work took a full fifteen years! Mennas has been available to taste and purchase as a wine from us since 2000.
The surprisingly full-bodied white wine Mennas has a very fruity nose, reminiscent of lychee, pineapple, and quince. The rounded entry on the palate is followed by a dense mid-palate, accompanied by a beautiful acidity structure and a lingering finish.

The variety name "Mennas" is a tribute by the breeder Hans-Peter Baumann to his aunt, Sr. Mennas Baumann (1917-2000), who always awakened joy and confidence in many hearts with her benevolent deeds.
The monastery name "Mennas" of the Baldegger sisters, in turn, goes back to Saint Menas († 295 or 296 or 309), who, according to historical sources, lived in Egypt and became a martyr. The pilgrimage town of Abu Mena later developed at his burial site, about 40 km southwest of Alexandria.
